The large avatar on top helps you visualize your movement in real time.
The 3 sections on the left column represent Torso rotation, forward bend, and side bend.
The 3 sections on the right column represent Pelvis rotation, forward bend, and side bend.
Tip: Before trying to get into the proper golf positions, just start by standing straight and get used to moving the avatar in each box. For example, the top left box is torso rotation, rotate to the left and right and see how the avatar moves. Then look at the left middle box and bend your torso back and forward. After getting comfortable navigating your avatar, you can practice the golf positions.
For each position, try to move your body into the red target sections. When you get close, the section will turn yellow. When you are in the target zone, it will turn green.
As you perform and hold the correct movement for each swing position, the positions progress. You can also switch to the next position by tapping on the buttons.
This calibrates the sensors to the environment. The sensors will determine if it is needed, so you only need to do it when prompted.
When prompted for On-Body Calibration perform the following procedure while wearing the 3D Smart Shirt. Make sure your sound is on and audible.
At the beep, bend your knees, lean slightly back, then bend at the waist forward until you hear another beep.
Tips: The system is looking for 45 degrees of forward bend of the pelvis. Bending your knees and extending before bending can help you achieve the target bend. It allows your pelvis/hips to achieve the forward bend even if you have a tight back or hamstrings. You can do the forward bend quickly. The beep will indicate you have hit the threshold.
After you hear the beep, simply stand straight and turn 180° to face the opposite direction. You will hear another beep indicating success of the turn.
Then repeat the “toe touch” bend, leaning back and bending forward until you hear the next sound.
On-Body Calibration Complete!
Stand with your lead wrist pressed against your chest throughout the calibration. At the beep, bend your knees, lean slightly back, then bend at the waist forward until you hear another beep.

If you notice that the avatar doesn't move realistically during training, press the (standing man symbol) in the upper right corner to repeat the body calibration.
Tip: If you cancel a calibration, the garment cannot be recalibrated straight away. The sensors need to reach a stable state to re-initiate calibration. This error message warns you of the time that needs to pass before the next calibration attempt: "The sensors are still in calibration mode from a previous calibration attempt. Please wait 30 seconds and try again!"
Advanced App Features
When registering your 4DMotion account for your 3D Smart Shirt, you were asked to select range tolerance levels for your torso and pelvis sensors.
The range tolerance level lets you increase target zones to make them easier to hit. Some reasons to increase the range may be if the target zones are too difficult for a beginner or if there is a physical mobility issue.
We recommend increasing the range if you find the targets difficult. Decrease the range as the targets become easier, or your mobility increases. Do NOT stress your body to reach the target range if you have any physical limitations
Range tolerances define how strict or lenient your training metrics are, making practice easier or harder. At 100%, the range is the widest (most lenient), while at 0%, it’s the tightest (most strict). The default is set to 50%.
Available levels are 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Choosing anything above 0% enables a yellow-coded zone in the 3D Avatar and Body Part Angle Widgets. The yellow range is a percentage of the green range, extending in both directions.
Changing your range tolerance settings affect:
Your training ranges
Your Analysis ranges (for Eagle and Ace packages)
The AI results
Your saved swings on the History screen (for Birdie, Eagle and Ace packages)
From the Home screen:
Press the Pencil icon next to your name.

Go to the History screen.
Open a session that was made with the Apple Watch app or the Wrist sensor.
Select a swing.
Tap on the Positions tab. The screen is scrollable. Under the avatar view, you can see a table with the numerical data of your swing.
This feature requires internet connection!
With this feature, every full swing you make while using the 4DMotion app is automatically mapped on your golf course, letting you review your entire round. If there's a shot you didn’t like, you can find it on the map and get a detailed analysis. This can be helpful for spotting any patterns in shots that often give you trouble.
How to give location access:
Option 1:
During registration, after adding your license and setting up your account, the app asks you to give access to Location, Bluetooth (and health data, if using the watch).
Option 2:
If you have already registered, during the first Analysis capture the app will show you a popup to give location access.
Important: Select “Allow while using the App” and “Change to always allow” in order to keep recording shot locations when the app is not on screen, but running in the background.
Option 3:
If you use the Apple Watch, during the first Analysis capture, the 4D Motion watch app will ask you to give location access.
If you skipped the location setup earlier, follow these steps to allow it now:
Open Settings on your iPhone.
Go to Privacy & Security.
Select Location Services.
Find 4DMotion in the list and tap on it.
Choose a location setting:
Never: You won’t see your location on the map.
Ask Next Time: You’ll get a prompt for location access when you open the app next.
While Using the App: Your location will be recorded whenever you use the app.
Always: this is the preferred option. This enables golf shot mapping even when the 4D Motion app is not on screen, but running in the background.
Turn on Precise Location to get an exact location.
Note: This feature may be less accurate if you're using it indoors for training.
The 3D Smart Shirt needs to reach a speed threshold to recognize swings. The movement required for putting is below this threshold. The app calculates your swing distance retroactively, between your current swing location and the previous one. However, since putting is not recognized as a swing by the app, you need to manually mark where your golf ball landed right before you start putting to get the distance of your last full swing.
On the 4DMotion Apple Watch app:
Under the judgment selector (thumb up/thumb down), press the blue Mark Ball button.
In the 4DMotion Mobile app:
Open the last full swing on the History screen.
Press the blue Mark Ball button.
How to fix if you pressed the Mark Ball button after the wrong swing
In the 4DMotion Apple Watch app:
Press the delete button next to the Mark Ball button.
Alternatively, press the Mark Ball button after the correct swing.
In the 4DMotion Mobile app:
Select the correct swing on the History screen.
Open the Map tab.
Press the Mark ball button in the bottom right corner.
Select the location, and press Save.
Missing Mark Ball Button
When you are out on the golf course, you can track your swings and mark your last swing before you begin putting with the Mark Ball button.
The app recognizes when you make practice swings (=a rehearsal swing, which is the swing the golfer wants to copy when he actually hits the ball). When you make several swings in the same location, the Mark Ball button automatically deactivates.
Press the Earth icon to switch between satellite and standard views.
Practice swings are marked with a yellow pin, actual swings are marked with orange pin
Tip: You can zoom in and out with a pinching motion.
This analysis summarizes all your shots during a round of golf and highlights the key flaws or kinematic sequence tendencies that differentiate your good and bad shots.
You can find this feature under the Statistics tab.
- The white statistics show all the swings within the current Analysis session.
- The green "good" statistics show all swings marked as good during the current Analysis session.
- The red "bad" statistics show all swings marked as bad during the current Analysis session.
The "i" symbol opens a popup with the description of the swing characteristics or kinematic sequence metrics.

E.g. body parts are moving in the wrong direction, or the orientation of the avatar is not right.
Check if the 3D Smart shirt is worn inside out. The right side is where you can see the 4DMotion logo.
If the capture avatar is not moving correctly, make sure the sensors are connected correctly to the chest and the hip.
Adjust the 3D Smart Shirt on your body, and repeat the User Pose Calibration.
If these don’t resolve the issue, you may be in a magnetic environment that confuses the magnetometer in the sensors. Strong magnetic interference can cause the sensors to ‘drift.’ This can result in incorrect visualization, e.g. the body parts are not aligned correctly. You can repeat the on-body calibration to stop the drift.
Check if the avatar follows your movement.
Check if the sensors are worn correctly. They should be flush against your body during the entirety of the golf swing.
If you keep getting this error and you train in the same spot, try recalibrating and capturing elsewhere. Your magnetic environment may negatively impact the sensors.
Troubleshooting test: Take off the shirt and run the body calibration with the shirt on a plastic hanger. Keep the shirt on the hanger during the attention pose calibration and training and check if the error pops up. Move the shirt, and check if the avatar is moving correctly. If the error does not occur during this test, check if the sensors are not lifting or shifting when you swing.
When using the Apple Watch, it must be worn on the lead wrist. The lead wrist depends on the dexterity you selected when setting up your profile. It can be adjusted later (Home > Pencil icon > Dexterity).
The Apple Watch serves as a third sensor, and its placement determines which position you are in (P0-P6). Make sure you wear the watch on your lead wrist.
The calibration doesn’t move on from one step to another:
Body calibration is not a stretching exercise. Feel free to bend your knee when performing the calibration.
Make sure to bend in full range of motion. If needed, bend backwards first, then bend forward in full ROM.
If you cannot calibrate the garment at all while wearing it, take it off, hold the two sensors sewn in the back in your hands, and keep the hip sensor steady while you move the chest sensor forward to mimic bending over. Make sure to hold the sensors in the same positions as they are while worn.
Tuck in the hip sensor under your waistband. Make sure that you insert it without twisting, otherwise the avatar movement will be distorted.
If you cancel a calibration, the garment cannot be recalibrated straight away. The sensors need to reach a stable state to re-initiate calibration. This error message warns you of the time that needs to pass before the next calibration attempt: "The sensors are still in calibration mode from a previous calibration attempt. Please wait 30 seconds and try again!"
If the avatar doesn’t look or move right, try the following:
If the avatar’s body parts are misaligned/twisted: repeat the body calibration and attention pose calibration.
When bending over, the avatar leans back or vice versa: check if you’re wearing the shirt correctly, or if the sensors are plugged in correctly. If not, adjust, turn the gateway off and on, then recalibrate before capturing again.
When moving the pelvis, the torso moves, or vice versa: Check if the gateway is put on with the orange arrow pointing away from the body. If not, adjust, turn it on and off, recalibrate and continue capturing. If the gateway is positioned correctly, check if the cables plugged in are not twisted. If twisted, adjust, turn the gateway off and on, calibrate then continue capturing.
Please press “Restart” and try again.
After several failed attempts, remove and re-pair the garment:
On the Sensor screen, tap REMOVE.
Put the garment on the charger for a few seconds.
Tap the Bluetooth icon on the Sensor screen.
On the … menu, select Firmware Update and start over.
Turn on the Gateway. If it doesn’t start blinking, put it on the charger.
Contact us if the garment doesn't turn on after charging it overnight.
In the app: go to Settings '⚙', and tap 'send diagnostic info'. This works only when you’re connected to the Internet.
Via email: support@4dmotionsports.com. When reporting errors via email, please always write down what you did step by step, and attach a screenshot or screen recording of the error.
